Octopus as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

Under the sea in an Octopuses garden...

Has Octopus crawled across the ocean floor and swam into your mind's eye? Octopus as a Spirit Animal is akin to the call of the siren. Octopus is a magical creature of the sea who is often feared, revered, and unseen. This master of disguise and sea legend has something to say to us about how we live our lives and the mysteries it holds. Octopus is also a great model for working with the energy of Mercury Retrograde. Here is what it may mean for you if the spirit of Octopus has grasped you in its tentacles.

Octopus as a Spirit Animal

Multi-tasking & Focus

Octopus has multiple arms which are great for having your hands in many pots. If you find yourself constantly busy multi-tasking, call upon Octopus to help you do your tasks effectively with equal attention. Balance and time management is key. Know your strengths. Octopus also reminds us to 'Get a grip!' as the suckers on their tentacles encourage us to get a firm grip on something before going at it full force.

Abundance

With 8 appendages, Octopus definitely has something to share with us about prosperity as 8 is the universal number of abundance and cycles. The infinity symbol, or lemniscate as it is also known, tell us that there is no beginning and no end, just an endless cycle of energy flow. Connect with Octopus when working with you sense of self-worth and prosperity, or when manifesting abundance.

Flexibility & Fluidity

Be flexible and have an escape plan. Octopus can fit through incredibly tight places which look seemingly impossible to squeeze through. They are also great problem solvers due to their high functioning intellectual abilities. The Octopus knows it's limits and can understand obstacles from many perspectives, thereby allowing them to do the impossible - find a way out, down, or around. If you are struggling to find a solution to a problem, ask Octopus to teach you flexibility and to think outside of the box. They also have phenomenal strength and a fierce beak to devour prey. Octopus also encourages you to work on your strength and flexibility in your physical body.

Shadow work, Creativity, & Inuition

Explore the depths of the ocean floor. Octopus is a great companion in shadow work as it is not afraid to go to the unexplored depths with you, for it lives and breathes naturally here. When emotions creep up from hidden chambers and wrangle your mind, Octopus asks for you to explore them. Pick them up with your many tentacles and analyze them with reason. Are the monsters that lie within your depths really as scary as you think? The unseen darkness, the sea creature with abnormally long tentacles that stretch out of the sea and into your imagination, tickling your cranium with it's ideas - Octopus also reminds us to work with our creativity and intuition. Get your creative juices flowing! The sea monster of lore and fantasy asks for your fear to spark your intuition, increase your awareness, and allow your creative energy to flow.

Illusion & Confusion

Are you really seeing what you think you're seeing? Octopus is great at camouflage as it can readily change it's appearance through playing with the colors, spots, and textures in it's environment. A creature that can truly hide in plain sight. Is all really as it seems in your world? For the Octopus, black ink is yet another defense mechanism to confuse predators and allow for a quick escape from danger. Be mindful that what you are experiencing may just be an illusion caused by your own projections or what someone else wants you to see. What is the truth of the matter? Again, be flexible and fluid. Look out for predators. Have a plan or a trick up your sleeve, if you need to make a great escape from an unhealthy, dangerous, or toxic situation.

What is a Spirit Animal? | Animal Totems

img_6846.png

I've always been attracted to and fascinated by the animal kingdom. I have so many random facts about animals in my head it's ridiculous. I can't help it. There is a message in every creature on this planet. Perhaps I always sensed it, even as a child. Over the last few years, I've taken this passion for critters both big and small, and expanded on it. My learning has taken on a spiritual nature. I've written about a few Spirit Animals (FoxBlue HeronDolphin, Owl, and Squirrel) and yet, I hadn't explained what one is, how to work with them, or even why you should care about who your Power Animal is. It's time to correct that.

So now, based on my own experience, I bring you the answer to the question, What is a Spirit Animal?

What is a Spirit Animal?

A Spirit Animal, also known as Animal Totem or Power Animal, is an animal whose spirit has a special message or mission for you. They offer guidance, wisdom, and support. This is also known as their medicine in shamanism and Native American cultures. They may come into your life to help you through certain situations or to offer their strength and protection.

How do you know which animal is your Power Animal?

You may go outside your home everyday for a week and see a Raven as soon as you step outfront. You may encounter a Tiger in your dreams. You've been seeing images of Killer Whales everywhere! Perhaps you were always intrigued by Dolphins as a child. These are all Power Animals! You were attracted to or encountered them synchronistically. Is there a particular animal that you fear? Snake is often one of these creatures for most people. Perhaps it has something to do with this creatures inherent qualities. Snake is about change and transformation - the shedding of old skin. Is there a message they have to give to you that you're resisting?

How do you make contact?

Go into meditation. There are plenty of Meet Your Spirit Animal meditations on YouTube! If a guided meditation doesn't seem right for you, close your eyes, do some deep breathing, and see which animal comes to you. Don't be put off if it is not an animal you were expecting. Say if you were hoping for an Eagle and instead a Bumble Bee comes to visit. Be open and willing to listen. I'm sure the meaning of this creature is pertinent to you and your situation. You can even set the intention before you go to sleep that you'd like to encounter your Spirit Animal in your dreams.

Do you have one Spirit Animal for your whole life?

Yes you can! Some stay for a lifetime. Others may come just for a short period of time to help you learn a lesson. Once the lesson has been learned, they may move on. You may have many animal teachers come in and out of your life as you grow spiritually.

Can you choose your Animal Totem?

Absolutely! Think about what qualities you would like to embody. Do you want to be more of a tiger in your relationship - abundant, fierce, and playful? Work with Tiger energy. Would you like to invite more focus into your work? Then choose a creature like Hawk. Do you want more peace and purity in your life? Work with the spirit of Dove. Do you want to invite more childlike energy into your day? Invite the spirit of Dolphin to come and play! You can also work with the energy of an animal you've always been fascinated with and want to learn more about.

How do you work with your Spirit Animal?

Meet with them in meditation. Ask them to be with you as you go about your day. Ask for their strength in trying circumstances. Ask them to help guide you in the right direction when you're confused. Get a statutette, photo,or an item in their likeness. Something that reminds you of them. I, for example, have a Raven pendant I wear everyday. I also have a Raven figurine carved from black onyx that I keep on my altar. Try taking one day out of your week and embody their qualities. Walk as the Lion. Think and use your wisdom as the Owl. Be prepared and resourceful like the Squirrel. You can even invite them into your rituals and manifesting!

So you found your Spirit Animal...Now what?

Work with them daily. Ask to feel their presence. What does their energy feel like? Listen to and decipher the messages they bring. Keep an eye open for any signs they give you. When do you see your Spirit Animal? When do you most feel them? What were you just thinking about before they happened to cross your path, run across the road, or squwak loudly, gaining your undivided attention. There are messages in the synchronicity! Keep an eye out for it. Pay attention to the world around you. Expand your awareness. You may be surprised at what you find.

What's your Animal Totem? How do you connect? What has been your experience since the spirit of this creature came into your awareness?

Squirrel as a Spirit Animal | Animal Totems

img_6519.jpg

Squirrel has been ever present as of late, making chucking noises and happily bounding across the yard. As I sit at the window watching them intently searching for acorns, my thoughts turn to what this cheerful little creature has to share with us. Here is what it may mean if you feel called to discover Squirrel as a Spirit Animal.

Preparation

Winter is coming - and the Squirrel intuitively knows it. Months ahead, they begin planning and making their preparations for shelter and food stores for the long winter ahead. Squirrel teaches us to always be prepared. To think ahead. To gather your resources. What do you have now, what tools do you have at your disposal, that you can save for a rainy day? Maybe now is the time to save more money or invest in your education. What is an old skill that you can repurpose and use in a new way? You never know how what you already have in your repertoire will come in handy!

Expect the Unexpected

Squirrel is always on the look out for predators - he has to be. He also has to be crafty and cunning in how he avoids these dangers. Squirrel invites you to make a plan B so that you're not blindsided by the unexpected. Squirrel knows it is better to climb to the tree tops for safety. This way he can get a bird's eye view of the situation and maneuver accordingly.

Be Resourceful - and a little fiesty

Friendly and not afraid to let you know how they feel, squirrels are some of the most resourceful creatures out there! Squirrel may be telling you it's time to survey your resources. What do you have? What can you share with others? Having a Squirrel animal totem also encourages you to be curious and to make new friends! Chat it up. This creature also reminds us that sometimes it's okay to be bit nutty. It's okay to be passionate and to express your pleasure or lack thereof.

Remember to help the planet 🌎💚

Squirrel isn't afraid to do a little digging! With such a short attention span, squirrels forget where they buried their nuts within seconds. This actually turns out to be a good thing as although forgotten, these acorns have been given a chance to germinate, grow, and sprout new life. Squirrel encourages you to recycle, plant a tree or garden, donate your money or time to worth environmental causes. Squirrel also reminds us to live in an environmentally friendly and ethical way. When his acorns mature into trees, his energetic footprint provides oxygen for generations - long after Squirrel is gone. What kind of footprint do you leave on Mother Earth?

Squirrel is a small creature that may often be overlooked but his message packs a powerful punch. Don't you think?
